Discover the exquisite artistry and heritage of Japanese glass pen!

Sase Kogyosho Bamboo Glass Pen 3-Piece Set is a testament to a century-old tradition, combining the natural warmth of bamboo with the luminous beauty of glass, meticulously crafted by one of Japan’s most renowned glass pen workshops.

The Bamboo Glass Pen 3-Piece Set (Cobalt Blue)

This beautiful set includes three distinct nibs—fine (細), medium (中) and broad (太)—each topped with a unique, hand-shaped glass tip and mounted on a natural bamboo shaft.  The Cobalt Blue set has the glass pen with a fine tip in blue color.  The color is meant to make the fine tip more visible.

Every pen is finished with care, as evidenced by Sase Kogyosho’s trademark attention to detail. The set is perfect for ink-swatching, sketching, calligraphy, journaling, or simply enjoying the tactile pleasure of hand-written correspondence.

Key Features

  • Handmade in Japan by Sase Kogyosho, the workshop that continues the original glass pen tradition started by Sadajiro Sasaki since 1902.
  • The set includes three pens of different tip sizes: Fine, Medium, and Broad.
  • Bamboo shaft: original design, lightweight, eco-friendly, and comfortable to hold.
  • Handcrafted eight-grooved glass tips: Each pen features eight (8) even grooves for smooth ink delivery and easy cleaning.
  • Capillary action: efficient ink absorption and release—a full dip could write up to 100-120 characters.
  • Unique craftsmanship: Each pen is an individual work of art, with subtle variations in color and form.
  • Fine tip is deliberately made of dark amber glass for easy identification.

The Legacy of Glass Pens

The story of the glass pen is as captivating as the pens themselves. Developed in Japan in the early 20th century, glass pens were the brainchild of wind chime artisan Sadajiro Sasaki, who first introduced this innovative writing instrument in 1902.

The glass pen’s ingenious design harnesses capillary action through delicately grooved tips, allowing ink to travel smoothly and evenly to the page. With just a single dip in ink, these pens can write a postcard’s worth of words—making them not only beautiful, but practical and efficient.

Glass pens quickly gained popularity around the globe for their unique blend of artistry, functionality and ease of maintenance. Unlike traditional quills or fountain pens, glass pens are easy to clean, allowing for quick color changes and effortless upkeep and they are a perfect tool for ink-swatching or sketching.  Over time, their design evolved from simple glass-tipped bamboo pens (the original glass pen design) to entirely glass constructions, yet the original bamboo-glass hybrid remains a classic and treasured form.

The Sase Kogyosho Heritage

Founded in Tokyo in 1912 by craftsmen who trained under Sasaki Sadajiro himself, Sase Kogyosho stands as the last workshop in Japan to preserve the authentic tradition of the original glass pen. Through three generations, the workshop has maintained an unwavering commitment to technical mastery and meticulous handcraft. From the Meiji to the Showa era, Sase Kogyosho’s artisans perfected the technique of creating eight (8) evenly-spaced grooves on the tip and twists in the glass shaft, a skill requiring years—sometimes decades—of dedicated practice.

The bamboo glass pen, in particular, is a signature achievement of Sase Kogyosho. By marrying a slender bamboo shaft with a precisely grooved glass tip, these pens offer the best of both worlds: the lightweight comfort and organic feel of bamboo and the smooth, reliable ink flow only glass can provide. Each pen is individually crafted by hand, ensuring no two are exactly alike.

WARNING: Glass pens are very fragile and prone to chipping, cracking or even  breaking completely, especially if dropped. Due to the delicate nature of their glass tips, they must be handled with extreme care to avoid damage, and are best stored in protective containers to keep them safe from impact and transport mishaps.

Please note that we do not accept exchange or repair if your purchased pens have developed defects after being used.

The enduring appeal of handcrafted writing instruments raises a fundamental question: how do traditional techniques survive in an age of mass production?

Sase Kogyosho (佐瀨工業所), established in 1912 in Tokyo's Taito City, stands as a testament to the preservation of artisanal craftsmanship. Founded by artisans trained by Sadajiro Sasaki, the workshop carries on a legacy potentially inspired by the 17th-century Murano glassmaking tradition of Italy, where some historians believe glass pens first emerged. Today, Yoshihiro Rachi, the third-generation owner, guides Sase Kogyosho, which is said to be the sole remaining factory employing Sasaki's original glass pen-making techniques.

The creation of these delicate instruments demands years of rigorous training, a commitment that sets Sase Kogyosho apart in a world dominated by automation. The glass pen, more than a mere writing tool, embodies a tangible link to the past, a connection to the meticulous artistry that defined an era.

The survival of such workshops prompts reflection on the values we assign to tradition, heritage and the human touch in an increasingly digital world. Are we willing to support the continuation of these crafts, or will they fade into obsolescence, replaced by the cold efficiency of machines? The answer lies not only in the marketplace but also in our collective appreciation for the beauty and skill that reside in objects made by human hands.
