In this December 2024, Platinum has reproduced a version of the Kayakawa Mechanical Pencil - Japan’s first mechanical pencil - which was first released in 1915 by the founder of SHARP Corporation, Tokuji Hayakawa.
Only 15 original mechanical pencil models were produced at the time, one of which is now preserved at Sharp Technology Innovation Museum in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture.
This 2024 replica is constructed in brass and plated with a silver coating, the pencil’s exterior showcases a delicate, refined striated pattern that is engraved by a modern machinery technique to faithfully replicate the original invention. The weight, feel and design of the mechanical pencil inherit the essence of the Taisho Romanticism movement, which integrated Western and Japanese art styles during the Taisho era (1912-1926).
The pencil uses 0.5mm lead, which is advanced by the twisting the crown (the top piece) quarter clockwise.
The crown is engraved with a subtle pattern to prevent slippage when rotating, while the intricate engravings on the barrel provide a secure and comfortable grip.
Each Hayakawa pencil is presented in an exclusive paulownia wooden box, ideal for the long-term storage of this vintage-style fine writing instrument.

Care and Use Instructions:
- Advance the Lead: Turn the top piece of the mechanics pencil ¼ clockwise to advance the lead. (The button will return to its original position upon release). To push the lead back, turn the top piece ¼ clockwise again and push the lead gently against a hard surface.
- Refill Lead/Eraser: Pull the cap off the top piece of the pencil. Pull the eraser out and insert the lead refills from the rear of the barrel. Do not insert more than five refills as it may cause them to jam. Please use Platinum Pen lead refills (0.5 mm lead) and erasers (Eraser-100C) for replacement.

- Do not use for purposes other than writing
- Be careful when handling the mechanical pencil as the tip is sharp
- Keep out of reach from small children
- Accidental ingestion of cap may cause danger of suffocation.
- Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and high temperature when storing
- Be careful not to drop the mechanical pencil to avoid causing damage

Hong Kong and Macau have a flat rate of HKD 35.
For all other countries, the shipping rate is dependent on the order’s weight and will be calculated at checkout.
Which courier will my order be shipped through?
For Hong Kong and Macau, your order will be shipped through SF Express.
For Taiwan, your orders will be shipped through SF Express or E-Express.
For all other countries, Standard Tracked Shipping is shipped through E-Express. Express Tracked Shipping is shipped through Speed Post.
When will my order arrive?
Standard Tracked Shipping: For Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, estimated delivery time is approximately 2-4 working days. For the rest of Asia, 2-7 working days. For the rest of the world, 7-14 working days.
Expedited Shipping: Within Asia, typically 2-4 days. For the rest of the world, around 3-5 days.
