Boys, be ambitious! (少年よ大志を抱け Shōnen yo, taishi o idake)

Fine Writing International x Wagner Ebonite Pencket Fountain Pen: Sapporo Agricultural College (Limited Edition)

Released as a collaboration fountain pen between Fine Writing International of Taiwan and Wagner Pen Club in Japan, Sapporo Agricultural College (Limited Edition) fountain pen pays tribute to one of earliest American educators who helped the economic, educational and scientific development of Japan during the Meiji Restoration Era.

Prof. William Smith Clark

In 1876, Dr. William Smith Clark, an American professor and president of Massachusetts Agricultural College, arrived in Hokkaido. He came to help found the Sapporo Agricultural College, which later became Hokkaido University. He stayed in Japan for less than a year, but his influence lasted long after he left. He taught science, agriculture and independent thinking to a young group of Japanese students. When he departed in 1877, he is said to have turned on horseback and given them a short farewell: "Boys, be ambitious!" Those words are still a motto for generations of Japanese students today.

The Nib

The centerpiece of this limited edition is its custom-engraved 14K gold nib. It shows Dr. Clark the way Sapporo remembers him: standing tall on a pedestal in his long coat, right arm stretched out toward the horizon. The image recalls his famous bronze statue overlooking the city from Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill. Every time you uncap the pen, you see that as a reminder to look ahead and aim high.

Japanese Ebonite from Nikko

The body is turned from ebonite made by Nikko, Japan's only remaining ebonite manufacturer. Ebonite is hardened natural rubber that pen makers have trusted for more than a century. It feels warm in the hand, grips comfortably without slipping, and develops character with use, much like a good leather or wood.

This edition comes in a solid soft rosy beige, a quiet and earthy neutral tone like Hokkaido farmland in early spring.

The pen is adorned with the following gold accents, enhancing the sense of warmth and elegance:

  • A polished, pill-shaped gold roll stop on the cap, a signature detail from the First Version of Pencket.
  • A black-and-gold decorative center band that separates the section from the barrel.
  • A gold nib that matches the warm tone of the ebonite

Caring for Your Ebonite Pen

Ebonite is a natural material, so it needs a little care. Long exposure to direct sunlight or UV light can slowly fade or oxidize the surface. Store the pen out of the sun when you're not using it, and clean it with lukewarm water only. Avoid alcohol and harsh chemicals. New ebonite may have a faint, natural rubber scent at first. This is normal and goes away over time.
