Another ingenious bespoke art craft from Fine Writing International (尚羽堂): marrying oversized girthy vintage fountain pen with Ishime Nuri :
Fine Writing International Urushi Fountain Pen - Ishime Nuri Red (FAT Version)
The Ishime Nuri Red (FAT Version) fountain pen follows a long tradition of large, hand-finished lacquer pens. Fine Writing International (尚羽堂) is a pen atelier based in Taiwan. They took the generous size of classic 1920s–1950s vintage Japanese Eyedropper ebonite pen and gave it a finish you can feel as well as see.
The finish: Ishime Nuri (石目塗)
Ishime means "stone grain." It's one of the most tactile urushi finishes there is. Urushi is a natural lacquer made from tree sap, and it’s built up by hand in layers over a course of several months. To get the ishime texture, dry lacquer grounds and metal powder are applied onto the wet urushi surface and settles into an uneven, stone-like surface as it cures. The result is a matte, dry-feeling finish in deep red. It catches the light differently from every angle and grips your fingers without feeling rough.
Built big, on purpose
The fat barrel shape of such vintage Japanese fountain pen allows your hand to relax during long writing sessions, which makes the pen a good fit for someone who has a trouble with writing with a thin pen or prefers a larger grip. The grip section with a flared-up lip keeps your fingers steady, and the textured surface also helps with enhancing the grip.
Details that reward a closer look
- The exclamation-mark clip: a straight clip with a ball end is a common feature among vintage pens, which looks like a bold red exclamation mark "!"
- The atelier's seal: a silver 尚羽堂 seal marks the pen as Fine Writing International's work.
- The nib: a large gold-plate steel nib (Fine size) with a vintage-style "Warranted Special Iridium Pen" imprint and coupled with an ebonite feed.
Each pen comes in a pen pouch with a braided cord and a silver charm.
The fountain pen uses traditional Japanese Eyedropper ink-refilling mechanism (eyedropper not included).
