When we think of salmon, we often think of the fish consumed in a sushi restaurant, which typically thrives in cold streams. But did you know that Taiwan, located in a subtropical region, is home to its very own native salmon?
The formosan salmon is Taiwan's only indigenous salmon species. It evolved into a distinct subspecies during the Ice Age, adapting to Taiwan's unique environment. Due to its rarity and endangered status, as well as its unique lifestyle compared to other fish, it has earned the title of "National Treasure Fish." The Central Bank of Taiwan even features this remarkable fish on the reverse side of the NT$2000 bill.
Taiwanese brand Fine Writing Int. has collaborated with local artist Julia Chen, a skilled practitioner of Maki-e, to beautifully capture two lifelike representations of this national treasure fish on a fountain pen.
The pen's body features silver foil adorned with intricate high-relief painting, showcasing a gradient of blue, orange, and vermillion that meticulously illustrates the scales and spots of the formosan salmon. The pen cap incorporates techniques such as high relief and flat painting, combined with various colored lacquers and gold powder, depicting maple leaves and trees to evoke the unique natural scenery of Taiwan.
This pen uses a converter or ink cartridge and is equipped with a German 18K, Fine, gold nib.
Only five of these exquisite pens have been crafted, making them a rare artisanal treasure.
